Can CBD help a dog with seizures?

THE SHORT ANSWER

CBD has been studied as an adjunct for drug-resistant canine epilepsy. It is not a replacement for prescribed seizure medication or an emergency seizure plan.

What the question leaves out

Epilepsy trials involve dogs with defined diagnoses and structured monitoring. A seizure-like episode at home may have another cause. Starting a retail product without assessment can blur the timeline and delay useful care.

An adjunct study asks whether adding a particular preparation to existing treatment changes outcomes. It does not show that every dog can stop medication or that any chew labeled CBD will deliver the same result.

Make the next step useful

Keep a seizure diary with dates, duration estimates, recovery and medication administration. If safe, a video can help the veterinarian understand an event. Follow the clinician’s instructions about when an episode is an emergency.

Ask your veterinarian or neurologist whether CBD evidence is relevant to your dog’s case and what monitoring would be needed. Never stop or reduce anticonvulsants on your own.
